As a global healthcare foundation operating across multiple jurisdictions with a focus on cardiovascular disease and oncology, The Movement Health Foundation is committed to upholding the highest ethical standards in the use of data and artificial intelligence (AI). This commitment includes compliance with applicable Swiss, EU, and international laws and regulations.
In recognition of its responsibility, The Movement Health Foundation has developed a set of guiding principles to ensure that AI and data practices at The Movement Health Foundation align with its mission, ethical integrity and regulatory compliance.
This Policy reflects how The Movement Health Foundation processes and uses data (including personal data and non-personal data) and how AI technologies are deployed across its operations. This Policy complements existing internal and external rules governing the handling of personal and sensitive data and the responsible use of AI by everyone carrying out work for the Movement Health Foundation
Oversight of this Policy rests with the Chief Scientific Officer, which reviews and updates it regularly to reflect technological advancements, evolving legal frameworks, partner expectations, and emerging insights into the societal impact of AI and data use.
The principles of The Movement Health Foundation on data ethics and responsible handling of personal data are:
- Privacy and data protection are core values, especially for personal health data and cross-border data flows.
- Transparency and explainability are required internally for all AI systems and data processes.
- Continuous improvement through stakeholder feedback and international collaboration is emphasized.
- Access to sensitive health data is restricted and governed by strict confidentiality and encryption.
- Data sharing is governed by legal safeguards and only permitted under observance of regulatory obligations.
The principles of The Movement Health Foundation on the use of AI by individuals and organisations in scope for this Policy are:
- Human-Centric AI: AI assisted decisions must serve human welfare and dignity, particularly in healthcare contexts where decisions directly impact patient outcomes and access to care.
- Fairness and Non-Discrimination: AI assisted decisions must not perpetuate or amplify healthcare disparities, particularly given our focus on underserved populations in middle and low-income countries.
- Transparency and Explainability: AI assisted decision-making processes must be labelled as such to make it clear when AI has played a part in decisions and understandable to healthcare providers, patients, and communities we serve.
- Privacy and Data Protection: When using AI, data protection and security must be ensured and data protection rights must be upheld. Please refer to our Privacy Policy
- Human oversight: AI-generated output must be verified before using it.
- Accountability and Responsibility: Clear governance structures ensure responsible AI deployment with defined liability and oversight mechanisms.
